Liverpool John Lennon Airport was originally called Speke Airport until it was renamed in honour of the late Beatle. It stands adjacent to the estuary of the River Mersey 12km south-east of the centre of Liverpool off the A561 (junction 6 of the M62/junction 12 of the M56). In recent years Liverpool has become one of Europe's fastest growing airports, increasing annual passenger numbers from 875,000 in 1998 to 4.96 million in 2006. There is no Railway Station at the airport but you can take the the 81A or 89 buses which stops at Hunts Cross Railway Station, or the Airlink 500 which stops at Lime Street Railway Station where you can make onward connections. If you are departing from Liverpool Airport the terminal building is split into 3 levels: Levels 1 and 3 are before going through security so are open to the general public. Level 2 is after security and is for travellers only. Parking and public transport access is immediately in front of the terminal building.
