The Kona Dew range of street hybrid bikes all epitomize great value. The manufacturer is well respected, and Kona style is known the world over.
Primarily aimed and fitted out for street riding - commuting to work, or out-and-about on the lanes at the weekend - they will also let you explore paths and gentle trails when you choose, which is what hybrid bike riding is all about. What is the makeup of the collection?
All have frames constructed from Kona's 7005 aluminium. The nicely sloped top tube gives you better standover clearance and means that all the models are unisex. The frame geometry does differ between models however. All will take mudguards - possibly indispensable on a commuting bike.
They all run on 700 mm road (rather than MTB) wheels, and all apart from the FS suspension model carry Kona’s own Project Two aluminium fork. The triple chainset fitted to all models gives utmost overall flexibility on hills and for road speed.
The different models show improvements and upgrades in the components you would expect - gears, brakes and wheelsets.
The Kona Dew City is the entry-level bike of the series:-
o Twenty-one gears in three ranges. Shimano EZFire gear shifters.
o Sturdy and straightforward Tektro V-brakes.
o Flat pedals, wide tyres and a Comfort saddle mean that this is a sensible and relaxing bike to use.
o Priced very competitively.
Next in the series is the Kona Dew . In just about all respects it’s identical to the City. Particular to the Dew model:-
o Twenty-four gears in three wider ranges.
o Somewhat better wheel rims and front derailleur.
o More robust V-brakes form Tektro.
o All this adds up to a very practical bike suitable for almost all situations.
The Kona Dew Plus is the next bike up the range. Changes to the brakes is the main upgrade to this model:-
o Hydraulically-operated disc brakes by Shimano - increased stopping power, especially in the wet.
o Improved rear derailleur to Shimano Deore for more smoothness and reliability.
Next up the collection is the Kona Dew Deluxe:-
o The upgrade to a 9-speed cassette now gives you 27 gears.
o Upgrades to the quality of the front derailleur, the shifters, the rims and the brakes.
o A change to the frame - a superbly tapered top tube.
o The tyres are narrower - 32mm - which would give better road performance, although maybe less versatility off-road.
The Kona Dew FS is the only suspension model in the Dew range:-
o A Suntour suspension fork with lockout will help you to cope with bad roads or rough ground.
o There is more help with ride smoothness from the suspension seatpost.
o Modifications to the frame with more slope given to the top tube.
o Lower gears to help with the hills from a smaller chainset.
o Extra improvement in the quality of the front derailleur
o Superb value for a suspension bike.
The Kona Dr Dew is a bike designed with no compromise for speedy street riding and commuting:-
o Rigid Project 2 aluminium fork on Kona's tapered tube frame.
o Shimano hydraulic disc brakes for all-weather operation.
o Shimano Sora road bike components feature more on this bike - showing that it is built with road performance in mind.
o The wheel rims are sleeker, as is the saddle.
o The handlebar is smarter, the pedals too.
o There's little question that the eye-catching decals and paintwork will turn plenty of heads.
So the Kona Dew series has a bike that will suit nearly everybody, with a superb choice of specifications and competitive prices.
