Your dog should be eating the right amount of healthy food. If your dog isn't getting what he needs from his diet, he will have a hard time concentrating during training. Not only does it affect the dog's health, but it can have an impact on its behavior. Making sure your dog's nutritional needs are met helps give them the focus that they need to be able to learn.

Figure out the things that motivate your dog to help you succeed at dog training. You need to learn about what your dog likes, and know what will work with him and what won't. Irregardless of the intent of your training, include variety and make it enjoyable for him by rewarding him frequently with affectionate praise. If you keep him happy and motivated, he will not disappoint you.

Dogs that suffer from separation anxiety should always be in the company of other people. The dog needs to develop relationships to other people so its unhealthy fixation on you can start to diffuse.

You will be doing more harm that good if you over train your puppy. Keep your training sessions short and sweet, this will help your puppy be more focused. Your puppy will happier with the experience, and less resistant to your future efforts. He will be looking forward to them instead.

If you want to have a healthy, happy, well-behaved dog, you must engage it mentally throughout the day. Kong toys filled with peanut butter, busy bones, and walks outside the yard are fun activities that your pet can do. Bored dogs won't stay that way long; they will quickly entertain themselves by destroying your house.

Prior to training your puppy, make a bond with your dog by teaching him what his name is. Simply start by calling his name as often as possible. Once he learns his name, you can encourage him to come to you when called. These are the first words your puppy should learn. Try to spend a good amount of time with your new dog. This way he or she will be more open to some advanced training.

To make sure your dog pays attention to you, you should use its name as often as possible. Use his name more when he is a puppy. By the time he is grown, he will automatically give you his attention when you say his name. Give your dog a relatively short name, preferably one that isn't likely to be confused with other words.

A harness will be more comfortable for you dog, although you will lose some of the control a collar will give you. Using a collar and harness combo and only tugging on his collar when needed can teach your canine that he has to listen while harnessed, too.

Pay attention to how much time you spend training in one session. If you try to focus for a long period of time on one command, your dog will show signs of boredom and begin to get antsy. Keep first training lessons to 10 minutes or less.

Avoid playing tug-of-war type games with your puppy during training. These games often encourage a puppy to start biting. This behavior is very difficult to break, so you should avoid these games while they are still a puppy.

These tips probably got you brainstorming about how you will train your dog. Keep them in mind and learn some tips of your own. Each dog is different and responds in his own way to training.
