Clean air in an aviary is essential for the good health and longevity of your birds. Here are 5 features your cleaner should have for best results.

Be Effective----This might seem like a no-brainer of a statement. But there are certain things to look for in the technical specifications that are excellent indications of how well it will work.

The number of filters it contains is one of the best ways to determine effectiveness. Cleaners with one or no filters cannot possibly be as effective as those with multiple sized filters.

Pre-filters are designed to trap large and medium size particles that can be seen. A HEPA (or high efficiency particle arresting) filter is well known for its remarkable ability to trap particles as small as.3 microns in size.

Dander, feathers, dust and other bird-related particulates are continuously trapped with these types of filters and should be part of any filtration system in your aviary.

Run Safely 24 Hours---Because dust, dander, and feathers are a constant by products of birds in captivity, any cleaner must be as constant about keeping the number of pollutants low to minimize the number that are inhaled by birds and humans.

It is a must to have a permanent split capacitor motor that is rated for continuous high RPM (revolutions per minute) and long life duty. This means it will not overheat and is safe to operate whether you are there or not.

Take Care of Itself----A cleaner that needs very little maintenance will allow your aviary to have its air filtered for a greater percentage of time than one that constantly needs its filter changed, washed, sprayed, or recharged.

Being able to simply vacuum the outside of the cleaner while it continues to filter the air is a great feature to have. This means less down time, less money spent for filters, and more time freed up for you to simply enjoy the birds.

Maintain A Safe Environment---One of the ways to insure that the air in the aviary stays safe is to rule out cleaners with ozone. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ruled that any amount of ozone is unsafe. The only by product of the cleaner you choose to use should be fresh, clean air.

Choosing a purifier made of steel is another way to prevent odors and gases from contaminating the air. Cleaners made of plastic can off gas fumes once the motor heats up the plastic. And these fumes are often toxic to birds. Steel purifiers do not off gas in this way and as such are the safest choice.

Last A Long Time----Looking at how long the manufacturer warrants the cleaner can be an important indicator about the value. A cleaner that has a one year warranty and needs a filter change every 6 months might have a cheaper price initially, but will probably be far more expensive to use and not as effective as one with a longer warranty and multiple stage filtration.

Choose a purifier that has a three to five year warranty, has a pro-rated filter warranty, and whose filter is guaranteed to last five years. These kinds of warranties are up front indicators that your cleaner will be effective for a many years in your aviary.
