Hamsters are small, loving, furry and fierce creatures. They come in many varieties, and are known by many different breeds of hamster. Because there are so many types, it can be difficult to pick which to have as a pet. Having hamsters as pets can be a wonderful family activity or hobby to enjoy for years. However, some may be more suitable for children so read our article carefully to learn about which will fit your family the best.

They are basically clean and do not involve any elaborate procedure of maintenance. Owners just need to be on the alert for any kind of illness or disease that they might contract. They have a life span of about 3-3.5 years, and unfortunately, this is a very sad aspect of owning hamsters.

The Three Main Types of Hamsters

Syrian Hamsters: As the largest of all the types of hamsters, the Syrian hamsters can easily be kept as pets. Keeping Syrian hamsters as pets are suitable for both adults and children as they are friendly and tend to bond very quickly. As a nocturnal animal you will find them more active during the evening and night times. They are also know by the name of black bear hamster, golden hamster and teddy bear hamster. Because of their unique traits, this type of hamsters is more commonly owned in most households.

Russian Dwarf Hamsters: The Russian dwarf hamster is refer to by several different species of hamsters that includes the Winter White Russian Dwarf Hamster, Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamster and the Roborovski Dwarf Hamster. The Campbell's Russian dwarf hamster is the most common type that can be kept as a pet. They are available in different color combination, shades, and spots. Because of this, people tend tohave a range of options to choose from. Most people enjoy keeping them in pairs because they are social creatures by nature. If you keep a hamster as a single pet, they tend to get lonely. While it's fun having Campbell's Russian Dwarf hamsters as pets, it may not be the best choice of hamster for children. Compared to the other two, the Roborovski dwarf hamster is smaller in size but has longer legs. Because they have so much energy it can be a challenging pet to keep happy. An interesting fact associated with them is that they are extremely clean and spends most of the time grooming themselves.

Chinese Hamsters: Chinese hamsters require a large cage to live. They are relaxed, slower, and more calm that other hamsters. This makes them very easy to own with children or adults. Their small size and unique characteristics make them an ideal pet for all household. Because their attitudes and disposition is mild, they are the easiest to handle and play with. Because of this, most children enjoy owning the chinese hamsters as pets more than other breeds.

Above all, it's important to remember that male hamsters are more appropriate as pets than the female hamsters. While some dissagree, many find that owning male hamsters as pets requires less cage maintinece and more ease with brining in new members to your hamster family.
